Young People Teaching: Learning Together with the Bara Indigenous Community

The Teaching Youth Program is a joint initiative of the Estungkara program and the Youth School Community to support educational services for the Bontosomba indigenous community. The youth teaching activity was carried out for four days, 15-18 June 2023. A total of 11 volunteers dedicated themselves to creating and carrying out work programs in Bara hamlet.

Apart from that, this activity not only seeks to facilitate volunteers to teach the children of the Bara indigenous community, they also experience the life process of the Bara indigenous community. This appreciation process was conveyed through various activities: presentation of Balianja' traditional material directly delivered by traditional elders, practice of making ant sugar, and going door to door to residents' homes.

The output of this activity is a field narrative. The volunteers are tasked with compiling field narratives not only in the form of articles, but also short videos, Instagram reels, paintings, photo essays and short stories. The output from this activity can be useful for the process of informing the general public about the educational fate of Bara children, who are currently still attending school under residents' houses.
