Tinis is a woman from the Talang Mamak indigenous community who lives in Simarantihan Hamlet, Bukit Tiga Puluh, which is administratively located in Suo-Suo Village, Sumay District, Tebo Regency. She is the mother of five children, four of whom are still attending a remote elementary school in her village. As a mother, Tinis bears significant responsibility in ensuring that her family's needs are met, from food to education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tinis works as a rubber tapper on three different plantations. This work is her family's primary source of income. However, before leaving for work, she first completes various domestic chores such as cooking, washing, cleaning, and preparing for her husband and children. This routine has long been part of her life as an indigenous woman who carries out dual roles\u2014managing the household and earning a living for the family. This situation demonstrates the strong double burden that women still face, where domestic responsibilities remain even though women also contribute to the family economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amidst this hard work, Tinis faces significant challenges in meeting her family's food needs. Unlike most other Talang Mamak residents who have their own fields, Tinis has not farmed for several years, leaving her with no space to cultivate food crops. She has been able to rely on her brother Hermanto's field. There, Tinis grows various food crops, such as vegetables and chilies, to help meet her family's food needs. However, limited access to land makes it difficult for her to develop food sources independently, especially with five children to support daily. This situation demonstrates how access to resources, such as land, is still influenced by gender relations within the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Change began to emerge when WARSI, through its ESTUNGKARA program, provided mentoring to women's groups in the community, including through capacity building of the Rimpahan Paloriyen Simarantihan Women Farmers Group (KWT). Tinis became one of the members who actively participated in KWT activities. Through discussions, training, and sharing experiences among members, Tinis began to see new possibilities for strengthening her family's food security by growing crops in her yard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another important trigger came from real-life experiences in her own community. Tinis witnessed Kindok, the only man in the hamlet, growing young plants in his yard. Kindok had previously participated in training and a study visit to a farming site in Bogor during a training program held by Kemitraan through the Estungkara program. Kindok's simple practices opened Tinis's eyes to the idea that even the space around the house could be utilized for farming. The yard, previously considered merely empty space, could become a source of food for the family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Tinis, this change didn't happen instantly. She had to adapt her old habits of growing in the fields to a new approach, utilizing her yard as a growing space. The biggest challenges she faced were soil preparation, pest control, and the intensity of maintenance, which required watering. Unlike the simpler, traditional method of cultivating a field, growing in the yard requires different soil preparation techniques and a new understanding of plant cultivation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through WARSI's mentoring, which also collaborates with the Center for Independent Rural Agriculture (P4S) and the Sumay District Agricultural Extension Work Unit (UPTD) under the auspices of the Tebo Regency Food Crops and Horticulture Service, Tinis has participated in various training programs, including making liquid organic fertilizer, controlling horticultural pests, and strengthening women's capacity to become more confident in participating in women's groups and discussion forums. She has gradually begun to apply the knowledge she gained from these activities at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through this process of learning and experimenting, Tinis finally succeeded in developing a small demonstration plot in her yard measuring approximately 10 x 5 meters. In 2025, she began planting various young crops such as long beans, chilies, eggplant, and mustard greens. These plants grew well over several crop rotations, with the final harvest occurring in December. These results not only helped meet her family's food needs but also gave her confidence that she could manage food resources independently even without clearing land for cultivation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The changes Tinis experienced were not only evident in her success planting in her yard, but also in her attitude and confidence. While she previously felt inadequate to speak in group forums or community meetings, Tinis has now begun to actively express her opinions and ask questions during KWT discussions and women's class forums. She is no longer merely a listener, but has begun to share her experiences about the challenges and successes of utilizing her yard as a space for family food management. These changes demonstrate women's increasing capacity and position in the participation space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tinis's experience became an inspiration for other women in her community. She demonstrated that limited access to land need not be a barrier to developing a family's food source. The yard, traditionally considered a domestic space, can become a productive space that provides real benefits to the family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Tinis herself, this change stemmed from her desire to improve her family's life and her children's future. She recognized that every learning opportunity presented itself as a path to strengthening her independence and that of her community. On one occasion, Tinis recounted:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGrandma wouldn't leave the house until her homework was finished. Only after she was done would she tap rubber trees, and then she would go to the fields in the afternoon until evening. Sometimes your father would get jealous because she often participated in activities. But she didn't give up on her situation. Even though she couldn't read or write, she still came to meetings. She knew that was WARSI's way of helping the Talang Mamak community to advance their thinking and economy. She wanted to try everything she had been taught, and indeed, the produce from the plants near the house wasn't for anyone else, but for her and her own family.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tinis's story demonstrates that change often begins with small, consistent steps. Mentoring that creates a space for learning, sharing experiences, and strengthening women's self-confidence can give rise to new initiatives that were previously unthinkable. For Tinis, her yard, once solely a domestic space, has now transformed into a management space that offers hope for her family's food security. Furthermore, this transformation also demonstrates how indigenous women can be crucial actors in maintaining the sustainability of their families and communities.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
