It&#039;s a sign of reduced income, delayed household plans, and increased burdens of meeting daily needs. Until now, farmers have relied solely on price information from traders delivered over the phone. They never truly know how prices are determined, what the actual market price is, and how large the difference is. In this situation, farmers&#039; bargaining power is limited, and dependence on traders seems inevitable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This concern was directly felt by Isra, Ayuni, Inna, and Ramlah, female cadres involved in Estungkara&#039;s mentoring program in Enrekang. They observed a disparity between the farmers&#039; hard work and the economic value they received. Yet, salo dua chilies are known as a superior commodity that has even penetrated the export market. A simple question then arises: if this commodity is so valuable, why are farmers in Kaluppini still in such a vulnerable position?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through Estungkara&#039;s mentoring process, the questions didn&#039;t stop at complaints. Muslimin, the program facilitator, facilitated their direct learning at the Laskar Pelangi Salo Dua Agricultural and Rural Training Center (P4S) in Maiwa District, Enrekang Regency. On November 12, 2025, the four female cadres conducted a study visit to understand post-harvest processes, quality standards, and the dynamics of chili prices in the market. They not only learned proper picking techniques but also studied price fluctuation patterns and the factors that influence price formation at the market level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From this learning process, they discovered a previously unseen fact: there is a price difference of around Rp2,000\u2013Rp3,000 between the price farmers receive from traders and the selling price at the market. To some, this figure may seem small. However, for farmers who harvest tens of kilograms, this difference means hundreds of thousands of rupiah lost per harvest. If the price from traders is Rp25,000 per kilogram while the market price is Rp28,000, then for every 50 kilograms, farmers lose Rp150,000. This difference represents a kind of &quot;invisible cost&quot; that must be paid due to limited access to information and markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This discovery changed their perspective. Dependence on traders was no longer considered a normal condition, but rather a distribution chain governance issue that needed improvement. After their visit, they discussed and agreed on a concrete step: establishing an independent chili collection group in Kaluppini Village. This initiative was intended not only to obtain better prices but also to create a more transparent and farmer-friendly system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After discussions with the village head, they gained support to use the Merah Putih Cooperative Office as a collection location, with plans to integrate it into the village cooperative system in the future. November 23, 2025, was set as the first collection date. To begin, Isra, Ayuni, Inna, and Ramlah each volunteered Rp 2 million in capital, raising Rp 8 million as initial capital. These funds were used to purchase digital scales and finance the purchase of chilies from farmers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Preparations were meticulous. They updated the price information from the Laskar Pelangi Salo Dua P4S, which was then around Rp 20,000 per kilogram, and checked the price at Enrekang Central Market, which was relatively similar. Meanwhile, the price offered by traders to farmers was around Rp 15,000\u2013Rp 17,000. Based on these considerations, they set a purchase price of Rp 19,000 per kilogram\u2014higher than the traders, but still realistic, keeping with market prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Information about the collection was disseminated through the Chili Kaluppini WhatsApp group and each member&#039;s story feature. On the appointed day, they stood at the cooperative office with digital scales and neatly organized record books. Farmers began arriving, although some remained hesitant. Transparency was key. Each chili was weighed openly, recorded, and immediately paid for according to its weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Sunday, November 23, 2025, 17 farmers participated, collecting a total of 148 kilograms of chilies. While the amount may not be large, it marks a significant change. The farmers returned home with a different experience: fairer prices, a transparent weighing process, and direct payment. They were no longer entirely dependent on a single distribution channel. Furthermore, the 15-kilometer journey to Enrekang Central Market, which had previously been costly and labor-intensive, was no longer the only option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Estungkara&#039;s mentoring in Enrekang demonstrates that change doesn&#039;t always begin with major interventions, but rather with strengthening capacity and the courage to critically examine issues. Isra, Ayuni, Inna, and Ramlah transformed from information recipients to information managers; from those waiting for prices to be determined to those involved in determining distribution mechanisms. They not only improved farmers&#039; bargaining power but also introduced more inclusive alternatives for village economic governance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This initiative also expands the space for women&#039;s leadership in Kaluppini Village. The collection group they initiated serves as a collective space for women to play a strategic role in local economic decision-making. Women are no longer positioned solely within the production chain, but are present as drivers of the system and architects of change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nevertheless, challenges remain. Limited capital, supply consistency, fluctuating market prices, and potential resistance from established traders are factors that must be anticipated. The group&#039;s sustainability will depend heavily on orderly management, consistent transparency, and the ability to build a broader market network. Therefore, they are committed to conducting a comprehensive evaluation of the initial collection as a basis for system improvements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This experience confirms one thing: change arises from learning, reflection, and courageous decision-making. Estungkara&#039;s mentoring in Enrekang didn&#039;t stop at increasing knowledge, but also encouraged collective action that shifted farmers&#039; bargaining power.
