Women played a crucial role in this system. They collected vegetables, tubers, and medicinal plants from the forest, while also managing food supplies for their households. In this context, the kitchen was independent of the market. Food was available from the surrounding environment, and local knowledge was passed down through daily practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Changes occur as forests shrink and are replaced by oil palm plantations. Palm oil crops cannot be consumed directly, so families rely on market purchases for food. When chili and vegetable prices rise, the impact is immediately felt on household consumption. At the same time, social stigma means Orang Rimba crops are often undervalued when sold. Dependence on markets increases, while control over their own food sources decreases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Agricultural efforts were conducted in 2020 through an agricultural field school, supported by assistance from another institution. At that time, the harvest was quite good, and some of it could be sold. However, limited market access and low selling prices diminished enthusiasm for farming. The activity was ultimately discontinued. This experience left the impression that farming does not necessarily provide certainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In November 2025, through KKI Warsi, agricultural field schools were restarted with a simpler, more gradual approach. This process wasn&#039;t initiated on a large scale, but rather from house to house, planting chilies in polybags. Each family received three to five polybags, hoping to care for the plants independently. After two weeks, results showed that only two families had successfully nurtured the plants until they bore fruit. Most of the seedlings were damaged or died. This was due to cattle frequently grazing on the plants, children accidentally damaging the seedlings while playing, and the lack of protective netting to protect the plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This situation wasn&#039;t immediately considered a failure, but rather became a topic for collective discussion. The women, who tended the plants daily, shared the challenges they faced. From these conversations, a realization emerged that the individual model was difficult to sustain in an open environment. It was agreed to shift to a collective system by utilizing land next to the church, approximately 20 x 50 meters, previously donated by the village government when the Orang Rimba were settled to facilitate access to basic services as residents of Pauh Menang Village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The transition to a collective system changed the way work is done. Men began to actively participate in technical tasks such as land clearing, plowing, installing netting, and making beds. These activities took place primarily on Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday afternoons, taking time away from collecting oil palm fruit, which was typically done together by husbands, wives, and children. Women continued to play a role in planting, tending, and determining the harvest time. In practice, women decided when the crop was harvested and how the harvest was divided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Four beds were planted with chilies, kale, spinach, and corn, while another section was planted with cassava. This time, the goal was not sales, but rather to meet kitchen needs. However, various challenges arose along the way. Leaf beetles and root beetles attacked the corn. Strong winds caused some stalks to fall. Monkeys damaged the crops. The kale was planted too closely, stunting its growth, and the spinach didn&#039;t grow at all. The first harvest was limited, yielding about ten bunches of kale and one large bucket of corn. Of the 17 families, each household received two bunches of kale, enough for two days&#039; consumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Economically, this farming has not been able to replace the income from oil palm fruit bunches. They remain dependent on oil palm for cash and to buy rice. However, there has been a reduction in spending on vegetables. In a situation where they sometimes only eat one or two meals a day, the extra two days of vegetables makes a significant difference. This process also provides a learning experience related to traditional agricultural knowledge. To control leaf pests, they try using bintaro leaves as an alternative natural control. Corn roots are reinforced with wooden supports. They let chili seedlings sit for two weeks to ensure growth before transplanting. Mistakes in planting spacing become lessons for the next season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The visible changes are not only in the harvest, but also in the way they work. Farming is no longer done individually, but through scheduled, collaborative work. Solidarity grows because the process is carried out collectively. Women regain a role in household food management through decisions about harvesting and distribution of produce. Children are becoming involved in planting activities, so their understanding of food sources is no longer limited to the market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This initiative has not completely resolved the economic dependency on palm oil. Crop yields are still limited, and risks from weather and pests remain. However, the ongoing process demonstrates gradual change. They are no longer starting from a state of complete dependence on the market, but rather from a gradual effort to strengthen their livelihoods. Initial failures do not halt the process but instead serve as a basis for improving methods and strengthening collective work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis farm <em>No<\/em> enough for now <em>Just<\/em> and hopefully it can be sustainable. <em>No<\/em> &quot;You have to plant big ones, the most important thing is that you get the results first,&quot; he said. <em>parent <\/em>Rahana, the secretary of the field school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite limited resources, Rombong Ngilo is rebuilding farming practices that had stalled. Changes are occurring slowly but surely. The main focus now is consistency, technical improvements, and group sustainability.
