On the terrace of his house, Silvester S. (49) sat, occasionally looking at the jengkol crackers that were drying in the sun. His hands were busy. <em>whittle<\/em> sago palm fronds\u2014a material that will later be woven into the home and source of livelihood for his family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sago frond skin was taken from around the fields, approximately one kilometer from the house. After being sharpened until smooth, the thin blades are arranged crosswise and overlapping, forming the woven pattern he wants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&quot;I want to make an attic out of woven sago palm fronds,&quot; she said with a smile. &quot;You wouldn&#039;t be an artist if your house didn&#039;t have woven items,&quot; she added, half-jokingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In recent years, Silvester has been slowly improving his home. He expanded the kitchen, organized the workspace, and divided the family roles more equally. He and his wife began reorganizing their daily chores\u2014from childcare to farming to earning extra income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&quot;Don&#039;t waste time traveling to training programs that don&#039;t bring about change,&quot; he said. &quot;Slowly, I want to set an example that indigenous communities can also change and develop.&quot;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to farm produce like bananas, betel nuts, coconuts, jengkol (jengkol), and cloves, Silvester now earns additional income from weaving rattan, bamboo, and other local materials. Orders come in through word of mouth. In a month, his income from weaving can reach Rp. 300,000 to Rp. 1,200,000, depending on the number of orders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&quot;I can help buy zinc for the roof of the house, buy wood,&quot; he said briefly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the weather is good, Silvester uses the mornings or evenings to go out to sea. The fish he catches provides the family with a side dish, while also saving on daily expenses. The remaining money can be used to buy rice, sugar, or milk for the children. Silvester has also begun expanding the kitchen and building a dedicated work shed for weaving. Until now, the materials and equipment have been hanging inside the house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The division of labor at home is now more organized. When Silvester goes out to sea at dawn and returns in the morning, his wife cleans the house and takes care of the children. When Silvester returns, his wife heads to the rice fields or fields. At noon, they eat together, then Silvester continues working in the fields until evening. At night, the weaving is resumed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&quot;When I run out of ingredients, I take them while looking at the fields,&quot; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to weaving to customer orders, Silvester&#039;s work has gradually opened up wider marketing channels. Some of his weavings are now displayed at the Mentawai Dekranasda craft center\u2014a space previously lacking in locally sourced woven crafts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The opportunity arose during a dialogue activity between marginalized groups and the Mentawai district government regarding improvement, empowerment, and basic services, in November 2025. At that time, Silvester brought several examples of his work to be shown, namely, food covers, flower vase baskets, rice winnowing, and <em>person<\/em>\u2014a typical carrying basket for Mentawai women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Yeni Damayanti, Secretary of the Mentawai Regional Handicraft Council (Dekranasda), weaving crafts in Mentawai are still very limited, despite the abundance of raw materials and significant potential. Currently, commonly known crafts from Mentawai are mostly wooden miniatures or traditional accessories. However, weaving from bamboo, rattan, and other local materials still has significant room for development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&quot;Crafts like weaving are still very scarce in Mentawai. The presence of craftsmen like Silvester could be a source of new enthusiasm if they continue to develop,&quot; he said at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To facilitate marketing, the Mentawai Dekranasda (Dekranasda) has also opened simpler distribution channels. Crafts like Silvester&#039;s don&#039;t need to be shipped directly to Tuapejat (the capital of the Mentawai Islands Regency) at great expense. They can simply be shipped via inter-island ship to Tuapejat, free of charge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&quot;Once you arrive, we will pick you up or an officer will take you,&quot; explained Yeni.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silvester&#039;s first order was for ten rice winnows\u2014an item now hard to find in the district center. Furthermore, Silvester was encouraged to continue producing and stocking up on supplies to ensure a constant supply of his woven products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Silvester, this marketing channel is more than just about selling goods.
