In early February 2025, Malancan Village Head Jalimin announced during the 2026 Village Development Planning Meeting (Musrenbangdes) that transportation services for students would be provided using BUMDes vehicles. This also applies to sick residents and mothers giving birth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

"The fare is Rp. 5,000 as a replacement for the car's petrol only," he said at that time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This policy was adopted by the village head as a form of government contribution through the Village-Owned Enterprise (BUMDes) to the community by reducing education costs. This policy was also implemented to prevent violence against children, especially women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

"Since 2023, our village has been assisted by the Citra Mandiri Mentawai Foundation (YCMM) through the Estungkara Program, focusing on children, women, and marginalized groups. We assess how the village can contribute to these groups, within our jurisdiction. One example is violence prevention and reducing education costs," he explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jalimin said that Malancan Village has only been heard of negatively. He hopes that providing student transportation will prevent sexual violence and help cover transportation costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If students use a motorcycle taxi from Sikabaluan to Pokai, they'll pay Rp 30,000 one-way. Meanwhile, the fare from Sikabaluan to Sirilanggai is set at Rp 50,000\u2013Rp 60,000 one-way. Thanks to the village government's policy, parents only have to pay Rp 10,000 per child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students from Malancan Village, such as Ukra, Sirilanggai, and Sibeuotcun Hamlets, will be picked up and taken to Sirilanggai due to the availability of land access. Meanwhile, students from Sinaki, Langgurek, Kelakbunda, Bakla, and Malancan Hamlets will be picked up and taken to Pokai by car. pick up, <\/em>Then, they continue by crossing the sea by boat. The village government also provides free boats for residents and students Monday through Friday during office hours, as well as on other days and hours when urgently needed. The village head's policy was welcomed and felt to be beneficial by parents. For example, Wati (32), a housewife, was greatly helped by the transportation assistance provided by the village government. Besides the low cost, students can bring a week's worth of food and necessities to their dormitory, boarding house, or lodging when they go to school, such as firewood, bananas, cassava, and other supplies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

"We are also not worried because they were picked up and dropped off simultaneously," he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rutty (15), a student at SMAN 1 North Siberut from Malancan Village, said that every Saturday or holiday they just wait for the pick-up car near the school because there are several students who live in the school's dormitory. Likewise, the others just wait in their boarding houses or dormitories and can gather together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

"It was the same on Sunday. The car left Sirilanggai for Pokai to pick us up, then on to Sikabalua," he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Malancan Village Secretary Juniardi Sakelakasak stated that the village head has issued two policies for 2025 to support children, women, and marginalized groups. First, providing transportation services for schoolchildren from Malancan Village continuing their education in Sikabaluan and providing free boats, especially for pregnant and postpartum women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This student transportation service not only helps reduce educational costs but also prevents violence against women and children who remain in dormitories, boarding houses, or boarding houses during the holidays. This is because, based on experience, many students become pregnant out of wedlock while staying in boarding houses, boarding houses, and boarding houses when others return home for the holidays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

"So, parents know for sure that their children will be picked up and dropped off every Saturday, including on school holidays. Then, free boat services for sick people, mothers in labor and other urgent needs, the village head in early 2025 appointed a village boat operator to assist village government and community services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

"This is in line with eliminating cases of stillbirths among pregnant women and infants who did not deliver at health facilities due to transportation costs and other reasons. In 2024, Malancan was among the top contributors to maternal and infant mortality," he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When a resident is sick or giving birth and cannot be treated in the central area of Malancan Village, health workers or the patient's family simply contact a boat operator to be taken to Pokai and picked up by an ambulance or BUMDes vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
