The critical education discussion series for Benteng Chinese women has reached its sixth session. This time, the theme was “Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Efforts to Fulfill the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.” This activity took place on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, and was attended by 20 female administrators and cadres of KWPS Lampion Merah Abadi. This discussion was facilitated by Mr. Yusti Ekoputro and Mrs. Octa Famelia from PPSW Jakarta. This discussion was also held at the residence of the Head of RW 01, Mr. Cuan Hoy, in Belimbing Village.
Not only is it a forum for exchanging ideas, but it is also an effort to build collective awareness among Benteng Chinese women. Especially regarding the importance of understanding the rights of people with disabilities. As a group that is often marginalized, women with disabilities need broader support from society to obtain their rights.
The facilitators began by introducing Law Number 19 of 2011 which contains the ratification of Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. This law affirms that people with disabilities have the same rights as other members of society. Including the right to equality, non-discrimination, accessibility, and the right to live safely and comfortably without the threat of violence or exploitation.
Discussion participants were invited to dig deeper into how these rights can be realized in everyday life. Through interactive games such as “Toss and Peel an Orange,” participants shared personal experiences of happiness. This was then linked to the importance of creating an inclusive and supportive environment for everyone, including people with disabilities.
Although the rights of persons with disabilities have been legally recognized, their implementation in the field still faces many obstacles. One of the biggest challenges is the stigma and discrimination that are still strong in society. Many persons with disabilities still experience neglect, violence, and do not get proper access to education, work, and public facilities. In the discussion group, participants mapped the basic needs and rights of women with disabilities. Then, they developed an action plan to ensure that these rights are fulfilled.
The first group, for example, emphasizes the importance of equal services and freedom from discrimination. The second group highlights the need for access to education and participation in social activities. The third group emphasizes the importance of the right to express opinions and equal access to public transportation.
In addition to discussing basic rights, the discussion also highlighted the importance of women's political participation, especially women with disabilities. Benteng Chinese women are expected to be agents of change in their communities, pushing for gender-sensitive and inclusive policies. The discussion emphasized that inclusive political participation is not only about women's presence in the political process. But also ensuring that their voices are heard and taken into account in decision-making.
This discussion series is an important step in building awareness and strengthening the capacity of Benteng Chinese women to fight for the rights of people with disabilities. By identifying the basic needs that must be met, it is hoped that participants can apply this knowledge in their daily lives. Also, continue to encourage the creation of a more inclusive society.
The government, through various policies and programs, has demonstrated its commitment to protecting the rights of people with disabilities. However, active participation from the community, especially women, is essential to ensure that these rights do not only exist on paper. But are also realized in reality. This discussion, with all the interactions and learning that occurred, is a real example of collective efforts towards equality and justice for all members of society without exception.
